Does this controller replace the switch and lamp inputs on the control module or do you still need these? Suburban Water Heater Controller 162292 (IW60 On Demand)
The hot water unit was installed as a retrofit replacing and electric/propane storage tank water heater. The installer used the existing gas switch to connect up the unit and this switch is located under a double gang box with the other switch being the old "electric" 115V switch. I'm looking to use the existing wiring and would like to put in the control module, but am curious what the two white wires need to be connected to below. The existing gas switch is a switched +12V lead and the -12V needed for the unit I assume was derived from below.
My questions are two fold
Does the controller just need to see 12V meaning if I'm able to connect the two white wires to a +12 and -12V source and parallel the controller is it good to go? The heater wiring diagram does not indicate the voltage of the white wires. The assumption here is that I can find the controlled +12V and the -12V near the water heater and divert the two leads into whatever the controller needs to see - that's really the question.
If the above is true and the controller would work in this fashion - am I correct in assuming the switched +12V line is no longer needed and I could mount the controller essentially where the original gas and electric switches were located.
That's the plan - just looking to get clarification on the wiring requirements and confirmation if I'm on the right track before ordering the controller.
